Is rock climbing at Sunset Athletic Club a safe activity?

Climbing is an inherently dangerous sport, but at Sunset Athletic Club, we take safety seriously. We follow industry standards in operationg and maintaining our climbing facility. In a controlled environment like ours, the risk is minimal.

As the Climbing Wall Association phrases it, however, ultimately "your safety is your responsibility," and we encourage reviewing and understanding our policies, as well as and participating in our instructional courses.   

What do I need to do to climb?

First, review our policies (See "Policies" page). 

Then, complete a Sunset Athletic Club Indoor Rock Climbing Facility Acknowledgement of Risk and Agreement to Participate; Waiver and Release of Liability (See "Liability Waiver" page). 

Finally, register for an instructional course or other program (see "Instruction" "Youth Programs" and "Events" pages) or choose an open climb time (See "Sunset Rock Climbing" page) and have fun!   

Do I need to have my own climbing gear?

No, we have rental climbing gear available - harnesses, climbing shoes and chalk bags. You can rent the harness for $3 and the shoes for $5. If you think you'll be renting gear frequently, you can also purchase gear rental packages. 

If you do have your own gear, you are welcome to bring it. We will inspect it, and providing that it looks to be safe, you are welcome to use your own gear.

Do I need to take an instructional course before climbing?

Participation in instructional courses is not required before climbing; however, we strongly urge participation in instructional courses.

Adults and youth ages 12 and older should take the "Get Me On The Wall" Introduction to Climbing course and youth younger than 12 should take the "Kids Climb" course (see "Instruction" page).

Can I celebrate an event with or bring in a group for a climbing party?

Yes! We offer various options for renting the climbing wall, depending upon your needs.

Rentals are always scheduled so that you'll have private use of the climbing facility, and we'll provide staff to lead your event and the gear your participants need.

What if I want to give a gift of rock climbing?

We offer gift certificates for gear rental or for any of our climbing programs, including instructional courses and camps. See the climbing director for more details.
