Competition Training at Sunset Athletic Club coaches climbers ages 10-18. Interested climbers go through a three-part try-out process, and climbers chosen to participate on the “team” will train in preparation for local indoor climbing competitions.
There are two types of climbing competitions, with two different seasons. Bouldering competitions are climbed off-rope to lower heights and organized by ABS. Sport Climbing competitions are climbed on ropes to greater heights and organized by SCS. Bouldering season runs during the autumn and winter, sport climbing season runs during the winter and spring, each for approximately four months. All competition climbers register with USA Climbing. More information is available online at www.usaclimbing.org.
The SAC climbing team practices three times a week during the competitive seasons. Training for competitions includes the development of climbing techniques as well as athletic conditioning to improve fitness for climbing.
Climbers make a commitment to the Sunset Athletic Club climbing team, and all climbers sign in agreement to a code of conduct (adapted from USA Climbing), focusing on sportsmanship and integrity. In the sport of competitive climbing, motivation and attitude matter as much as ability.
The try-out process will begin with a written statement by each climber, explaining why he/she wants to be a part of the climbing team and what climbing means to his/her life, submitted at the beginning of the second phase of the try-out process.
During the second phase, all interested climbers will climb together while coaches and representatives from the previous season’s team observe, watching for both climbing ability and attitude.
The final portion of the try-out process will be an interview between each climber, with his or her parents, and the Sunset Athletic Club climbing team coaches.
2010 Bouldering season try-outs will be held in September.
2010 Bouldering Season Try-Out Schedule: Sunday, September 12, 3:00-6:00pm -Climbers submit written statement (new team climbers only) -Climbers climb together as coaches and team representatives observe -Interviews between climbers, with their parents, and coaches -Meeting among all parents, climbers and coaches to discuss expectations, sign the code of conduct, answer questions and discuss season details
Tuesday, September 14 is the first practice for Bouldering Season 2010.
During the competitive seasons, climbers practice three days a week, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Weekday practices are held after school, from 3:00-5:00pm. Climbers are encouraged to attend all three of the practices when possible, but weekday practices are optional. In consideration of school schedules, climbers will be asked to arrive at weekday practices at whatever time suits their schedules and welcome to stay after 5:00pm, although formal training will end at 5:00pm. All climbers will be asked to attend Sunday practices, scheduled from 3:00-6:00pm. If unable to attend weekday practices, climbers will be asked to climb at least twice a week in addition to Sunday practices. Attendance at practices is necessary to adequately prepare for competitions and to develop team unity.
*Regional Competition: January 15: Vertical World - Tacoma, WA (onsite) www.verticalworld.com
*Participation in the regional championship competition, which provides the opportunity to qualify for the national competition, requires participation in at least two local competitions, but climbers may choose to attend as many or as few of the local competitions as they want. Climbers will be encouraged, however, to attend and support the team as much as possible. As a team, the Sunset Athletic Club competition climbers will attend three of the competitions, italicized above, as well as the regional competition.
All competition climbers need to be registered through USA Climbing to compete. Registrations are handled online at www.usaclimbing.org. Registration is typically available beginning mid-September.
For the summer, climbers will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00-5:00pm on a drop-in basis. Practices will run for 9 weeks, from June 29 through August 26.
Registration is required for participation in Competition Training summer practices; previous participation on the team is not. However, climbing experience and the intent to try out for the team at the end of the summer are pre-requisites. Interested participants must agree to the Sunset Athletic Club climbing team code of conduct prior to beginning summer practices. Register with the climbing director/climbing coach.
Participation in the competition training summer program is limited as the climbing team will continue to be kept small to best serve the climbers. While climbing practices tend to be fun, a serious commitment to the team and to training hard are equally important. Please seriously consider before registering.
Fees for participation in the summer team training program will be based on attendance: $8 per day, with the option to pay one day at a time or purchase 10-pass cards good for the duration of the summer. Receipts for payment must be presented at the beginning of practice; 10-pass cards will be established as required.
While summer practices are planned on a drop-in basis, climbers will be encouraged to attend practices when possible. Each climber will also be encouraged to make the decision individually as to how intensely to practice for the summer. It can be a great time to focus and improve climbing abilities or to take a break and avoid burn-out, especially for returning team participants.
For each competitive season, fees for participation in the competition training program at Sunset Athletic Club are $350 for members and $400 for non-members. In the event that an injury during the first half of the season prevents a climber from participating in a significant portion of the season, a refund of up to 50% may be given. In the case of more serious injuries, refunds will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Climbers may also be asked to pay entrance fees for occasional “field trips” to other climbing facilities for training purposes (approximately $10-20 each time, approximately four times during each season). Finally, climbers will be responsible for registration fees with USA Climbing (approximately $40 per season) and individual competition fees (approximately $30 each).
Transportation to and from competitions is the responsibility of climbers and their families. Sunset Athletic Club is not able to provide transportation to and from practices or competitions. Families will be encouraged, however, to carpool and establish a system by which all climbers can participate in all competitions that they wish to attend.
Climbers will need to have their own climbing gear for competitions, but SAC gear will be available for practices.
As a participant on the Sunset Athletic Club climbing team, I agree to:
1. Always put safety first – whether climbing indoors or out – respecting limitations and following all safety procedures.
2. Always act out of respect toward all other climbers, coaches, competition officials, spectators, climbing facilities, climbing gear and the environment.
3. Behave in a sportsman-like manner at all times, acting with integrity, supporting other climbers and refraining from boastful or negative commentary or actions.
4. Absolutely NO drinking, smoking or substance abuse.
5. Refrain from using profanity or demonstrating other inappropriate behavior.
6. Commit to climbing hard, training hard and having fun.
